Flood Prevention Tips
A flood is an unfortunate occurrence that can affect any household or business. Fortunately many types of flooding may be avoided by being proactive.
Exterior flood prevention tips
Review the surrounding terrain
Walk the perimeter of the property and review the slope of the terrain to confirm all water is flowing away from the foundation and any structures. Make adjustments as required to ensure that any accumulating water will flow downhill, and away from your home or business.
Check your foundation
Check for cracks in your home or business' foundation. If you find any, make repairs immediately. Hire a professional to assess your perimeter drains and flush them regularly to ensure all water is flowing unobstructed.
Unclog eaves & downspouts
Prevent rain water from gaining access to the foundation of your home or business by regularly unclogging eaves and downspouts. Your roof water collection should also be separate from your perimeter drain system. Make repairs to leaky connections when necessary.
Interior flood prevention tips
Locate the water shut-off
Know where your main water shut-off valve is located in case you need to stop water at the source should a problem occur.
Keep sinks & drains clear
Avoid pouring fats, oils, and grease into household drains or flushing foreign objects down the toilet. These situations may cause a sewer back-up which can be far, far worse than a flood from a leaky pipe.
Don't run appliances unattended
Prevent a potential flood by not using the dishwasher or washing machine if they will be left unattended. We've remediated countless situations where one of these convenient appliances has broken down and created a flood that wasn't noticed until major damage was done.
Have your plumbing inspected
Hire a professional plumber to assess your hot water heater and all plumbing fixtures for potential issues. This assessment will preventatively tackle a flood and could also reveal unknown mold issues before they become a bigger problem.
